The issue of climate change has been a major problem affecting farmers of the country and many are calling for the provision of irrigation facilities to substitute the current rain-fed agriculture being practiced as a country.

This is to enhance food security and the economy and to make life easy for the farmers and the population.

Speaking to Mr. Kwesi Oduro, Irrigation Project Manager of Dizengoff Ghana Limited on this issue on Rite FM’s Agrotech show, he disclosed that while irrigation was the best approach to enhance the country’s agric sector, drip irrigation is the best option the farmers can choose to boost their cultivation though it’s an expensive venture to go with.

He described the current climatic situation as alarming, noting that the weather is unpredictable and farmers must be enlightened to know the right approach in fighting the climate change to manage the losses they meet.

The Irrigation Project Manager also expressed concern over the “unpredictable nature of the weather which is causing more harm than good to the agricultural sector.”

He observed that though the drip irrigation comes with its own benefits to the farmers such as controlling pests and diseases and farmers not buying chemicals for plants, the cost involved is huge especially in the case of large-scale farming, adding that the drip irrigation protects the plants at its young state.

He further advised farmers not to think about cultivating on a large-scale without any proper plans but to rather farm on a small-scale which is well irrigated to enhance their farming activities.

He later urged the authorities to devote much effort to improving the irrigation system in the country to enhance all year round farming.
